The company was incorporated in 1926 as the Royal Rapid Transit Corporation and operated bus lines north from Chicago to Milwaukee, Madison, the Twin Cities, and other communities. Its name was changed in 1929 when it was acquired by Northland Transportation Company, a bus line holding company controlled by the Great Northern. The Rexford, Mont., station of the Great Northern Railway was established in 1903. It was closed in 1972 when the railroad was rerouted due to the flooding of the area behind the Libby Dam.
